Following the consultation, a decision has been made that the Evelina London Children’s Hospital should be the future children’s cancer centre for children living in south London and the Southeast of England.
Conventional radiotherapy services will in the future will be provided at University College Hospital in central London it has also been decided. This is following the 12-week public consultation seeking the views of key stakeholders and users of the service regarding the two options for the future children’s cancer centre.
The alternative option was St George’s Hospital in Tooting and while there was a strong case for both and in both cases would provide a Children’s Cancer Centre on the same site as a children’s intensive care unit, the Evelina London site was chosen. This was due to the wide range of services that it offers, support for other hospitals in its catchment area and strong performance in research. The Evelina was chosen due to its specialist services and care for children, where 120,000 patients are treated every year.
I have been assured that there will be no sudden changes to how children and young people receive care and the Evelina London will work closely with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and patients to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible. The treatment centre will not be ready before October 2026
