The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has pledged to help deliver better mobile phone coverage for local residents in Medway.
Sajid Javid made the comments after a visit to Rochester Castle arranged by Kelly Tolhurst, the Conservative Candidate for Rochester and Strood.
The pair met with heritage staff during the castle tour and discussed ways to boost tourism, including improved mobile coverage in the area.
Mr Javid's visit coincided with a new Government consultation asking people to have their say on options to improve coverage across the four mobile networks (EE, 02, Three and Vodafone).
Currently around a fifth of the UK suffers from poor coverage, which leaves users unable to make calls or send texts – but the Culture Secretary is "determined to fix the problem."
Sajid Javid said:
"It was fantastic to meet the team at Rochester Castle and I am grateful for Kelly inviting me to view what is a great piece of British history.
"Our discussions included improving tourism and it was made quite clear that poor mobile phone coverage is a particular issue in parts of Medway and needs to be tackled.
"I am determined to fix the problem and would urge residents to take part in our new consultation, with the results deciding future legislation for better phone coverage."
Kelly Tolhurst added:
"Better mobile phone coverage is essential for Rochester and Strood and I am glad Sajid has pledged to find a solution.
"From campaigning in Hoo I also know that improved coverage is needed for peninsula residents and this is something I will champion if elected as MP."
