Last month I joined Rehman Chishti MP and Medway Dementia Action Alliance to support and celebrate some of the determined and positive lives people can lead despite suffering from dementia. I was delighted to learn how people can live well with dementia, with the right care, support and understanding.
Medway Dementia Action Alliance’s event, called “Living Well with Dementia”, was a success in proving that life does not end when dementia begins. It was a pleasure to engage with some of the guests who spoke about meaningful activities that can make a difference, inspire carers, those looking after people living with dementia and people living with dementia.
As part of Dementia Awareness Week charities both large and small sought to increase understanding of dementia amongst the general public, parliamentarians and decision makers. I am pleased to pledge my support to help achieve this, as well as doing all I can for dementia sufferers within Rochester and Strood.
Like many others, I expect the Government to keep good on its promises to prioritise dementia care over this Parliament. This includes ensuring that those suffering from dementia have easy access to the necessary support and care. Having the appropriate community care measures is vital for the respect and dignity of those who suffer from illnesses such as dementia, and I am fully supportive of improving standards and awareness across the board.
Only by confronting our worries and fears around dementia can we address it directly, and I look forward to future work alongside the likes of Medway Dementia Action Alliance.
