Local MP, Kelly Tolhurst, is encouraging primary schools in Rochester and Strood to take part in a poster competition in an effort to tackle litter.
The constituency-wide competition is being run by Kent based anti-litter charity, Litter Angels, which was set up to educate children about the impact that litter has on our local environment. The charity is backed by McDonald’s and Keep Britain Tidy.
For the first time, Litter Angels is inviting year 5 pupils in every primary school across Rochester and Strood to take part in this year’s competition, which will take place during September and October. The theme of this year’s competition is how litter harms the seaside.
Schools that agree to take part will receive a lesson pack in September with instructions on how to enter.
Once all the entries have been received they will then be narrowed down to one winner from each school which will be announced at a special presentation evening towards the end of the year. Each winner will receive a goodie bag containing a certificate, a personalised mug and a copy of the Litter Angels storybook.
One overall winning poster will be displayed in McDonald’s car parks across Rochester and Strood and both the school and winning pupil will each win a cash prize.
Kelly Tolhurst MP added:
“It is often saddening walking around our Medway towns and seeing the amount of litter, but this is also a wider issue impacting our environment on land and our seas so it is important our children know more about it.
“Litter Angels is a great an fun initiative to provide this learning and I am pleased to be taking part in Rochester and Strood and congratulating our local winners.
Gordon Henderson MP, Chairman of Litter Angels, said:
‘Litter is a major issue and so one way of tackling that is to teach future generations the impact litter has on our environment, using a fun and artistic approach, in the hope they will not drop litter and take pride in where they live and play.’
